Kennebunkport
is as Maine as it gets. Only 90 minutes north of Boston, Kennebunkport
lets you breathe in the beauty of the Maine coast along with the
bracing salt air. Kennebunkport is well known for shopping, dining
and stately summer homes. One of the more spectacular homes belongs
to our most famous seasonal residents, George and Barbara Bush.
We are home to Cape Porpoise, the quintessential Maine working harbor,
port to lobstermen, fisherman and recreational boaters. Also part
of Kennebunkport is Goose Rocks, a quiet village at ocean's edge
with long expanses of sandy beaches.
SUMMER is the season most people associate with Maine because while the rest of the country is hot, we're not. Summer is our season of warm
sun, comfortable temperatures, fun-filled days and magical nights. You
can beachcomb, build sand castles, swim, jog, boat, walk, bike, golf,
play tennis, fish, sightsee, antique, shop, whale watch, paint, write,
read, relive history, dine in style, relax and rejuvenate!
In FALL the days sparkle and the nights are crisp. Summer's warmth
still lingers in the ocean and on the beaches. There are treasures to
be found in our shops, and the weather is ideal for biking, walking,
tennis and golf. But Fall's shining star is "color." In Kennebunkport,
the Fall foliage takes your breath away and the leaves blaze brighter
against the backdrop of blue sea.
WINTER is very special in Kennebunkport.
The trees glisten with snow and the spirit of the season fills the
air. The holidays bring about special events such as: Christmas
Prelude, an exciting time for shopping, caroling, and visiting with
families and friends: February is for Lovers, a month-long event
that is designed especially for couples: Cross country skiing and
sleigh rides provide other reasons to return to Kennebunkport again
and again throughout the season.
With SPRING comes the shedding of winter's mantle. It is a season of
new beginnings. You can visit a farm, watch maple syrup being made, and
be among the first to taste the new product on a stack of piping hot
pancakes. You can take the years first walks on the beach. Marvel at
the budding of wild lupine and primrose -- some of the first pastels
that color the landscape and lift your spirits. Enjoy the first
lobster dinner of the year. Tour our B&B's on the annual B&B and Garden Tour.
DOCK SQUARE
Picturesque Dock Square is in the heart of Kennebunkport village.
Overlooking the Kennebunkport River just prior to its meeting the
Atlantic Ocean, the Square has been a thriving commercial center for
nearly two centuries. Once stocked with wares for the local
shipbuilders and seagoing traders, the historic waterside buildings of
Dock Square now house an array of fine gift shops, boutiques, art
galleries and restaurants. After a day of shopping, dining and
browsing, visitors enjoy strolling the surrounding tree-lined streets of
the village with its outstanding examples of Federal-style and Greek
revival architecture.
In the center of the square stands a monument, a memorial to "our
soldiers and sailors," encircled with flowers from May through October.
Here, former President George Bush, makes his annual appearance at
Memorial Day ceremonies. During the annual Christmas Prelude
festivities, a tall evergreen tree, adorned with brightly painted
lobster pot buoys, accompanies the monument as the center piece of Dock
square.
In his 1930 novel "Mirthful Haven," Kennebunkport summer resident Booth
Tarkington, calls the square "Cargo Square." Today, a popular guidebook
describes the Dock square area as "one of the liveliest summer spots on
the New England coast."
